Music Me

So the good thing is that we're allowed to listen to our iPods at work. The bad thing is that after listening to it for about 7 hours, 5 days a week, I'm already getting sick of my current library of almost 2500 songs.

So I turn to you, loyal reader, looking for some suggestions for new music discoveries. Work is the perfect time to listen to new music, since it takes enough focus to keep me from getting bored, but not so much that I mess up my work.

My tastes are pretty eclectic. Not crazy about most rap. Country I'm not a huge fan, though I'll make exceptions for country that verges more on folk (eg. Johnny Cash), or rock-county (eg. Sweet Home Alabama). No Garth Brooks or that guy with the moustache. I won't rule out Top 40 stuff (mainly because I pay so little attention to the charts I won't know what is or isn't currently ranking up there) - but definitely no boy bands or Idols of whatever nationality.

To give some idea of what sort of thing I do particularly like, I'd say my favourite groups inclue: Counting Crows, Sarah McLachlan, Leonard Cohen, Barenaked Ladies, Green Day, Great Big Sea, Alanis, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Simon and Garfunkel, Pink, Queen, Tracy Chapman...

I tend to like the genres: folk, alternative, punk, rock, singer-songwriter, musicals, oldies, some blues, chick rock, Celtic, classical...

But I'm not limiting you to those. Anything fun, different, musically or lyrically interesting, or just that caught your attention and you don't know why - drop me a line with the artist and song name and I'll see if I can find it. Even suggestions for stuff that was popular back in the day but has since faded into obscurity (eg. Walking on the Sun, Save the Best for Last, Black Velvet, etc.).

I should also mention that I might be using less than 100% legal means to procure some of these songs, so if you are particularly against me doing so with your recommendations, please make note of that.

You can comment on my LJ, my Facebook wall (or answer the Q on my Facebook page), or even do the old fashioned thing and send me an email (or, gasp, even talk to me directly).

Have you tried Celtic Woman? They are pretty good. Or what about Enya or Clannad? They're all Celtic too. Oh, or The Corrs. I love them. If you like violins/fiddles.

Grabbing some Celtic Woman and Corrs. Enya and Clannad I already had, so you're on the right track from the sounds of it. :)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Been sick lately, bad cold. Fevers, etc. When I've /been/ lucid, though, I've largely been listening to the more recent Broadway soundtrack for Man of La Mancha -- it's the one with Ernie Sabella, if that helps narrow it down.

The High Violets are good. Depeche Mode. Psychedelic Furs. I dunno. :P

I'll see if I can find that musical album specifically. I should branch out beyond just musicals I've seen. :P Also trying to grab some of those others, though High Violets aren't getting me any hits, alas. But thanks for the recs. I'll give the ones I can find a listen.

Re: being sick. We've done what we can to cover for now, but when you're back on your feet, let me know and I'll try to make sure everything is all caught up (keeping this vague since it's a public entry). :P

My current fave is 3 Days Grace, both cds are great but you might find them a little heavy.
Lisa Loeb - female singer/song writer
But Arrogant Worms (folk comedy) still helps me not murder people after a long day of of stupid
before 3dg there was Live (80's rock) I still realy enjoy their birds of prey cd but others are hit or miss
And I still listen to Aqua and Prozzac, although I can't listen to prozzac as a album, adding their songs to some other playlist makes me smile

I'll give 3 Days Grace a shot - I already have and enjoy their I Hate Everything About You, so I'll try some more. I don't particularly mind heavy - my playlist really is all over the place, just tends to have more accoustic/folky stuff.

I had one Lisa Loeb song, so I'll grab some more. I always liked her well enough back in her heyday but never got an album or anything.

Arrogant Worms, I think I actually have most of their songs already, except the stuff off the newest album. Seem them in concert here in TO a few times. So you're on the right track with them. :P

I did have three Aqua songs and had recently grabbed Sucks to Be You since I loved that song back in the day. So I'll snag more of both of them.

Working on finding that Live album too.

Thanks for the suggestions!
